Smoke Mirrors were inspired by a moment of pure panic when I attempted to silver mirror a sheet of glass in my bath tub. Naive and unprepared for the noxious fumes of ammonia produced by the chemical reaction and the speed at which the metals start to develop I created a chaotic and imperfect mirror. The next lesson I learned was about the importance of the backing, traditionally just a black enamel application, a mirror is nothing without it’s backing. With Smoke Mirror I wanted to embrace the translucent and iridescent metals on the glass and use the vinyl backing to graphically highlight the most desirable spaces of the mirror with the reflection.
